CLEVELAND--Six Miami University men's track and field student-athletes have been named to the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Men's Track and Field All-Academic Team. The RedHawks' six honorees were the most for any league school.
Senior throws specialist Dan Beach (Arlington, Ohio/Arlington) boasted his third Academic All-MAC award. Between cross country and track and field seasons, junior distance runner Pat Sovacool (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) earned his fourth Academic All-MAC honor, while senior distance runner Michael Veatch (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) captured the third of his career and sophomore distance runner Paul Krebs (Kettering, Ohio/Alter) garnered his second. Junior distance runner Kevin Silver (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) notched his second Academic All-MAC Award, both coming during the track and field seasons. Senior pole vaulter Jake Kuhner (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) earned the first Academic All-MAC award of his career.
Sovacool was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team earlier this month and is on the ballot for Academic All-America consideration. He owns a 3.60 grade-point average and majors in Zoology. Sovacool finished fourth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships with a time of 14:12.84, which also qualified him for the NCAA Championships on June 11-13 in Des Moines, Iowa. He will run in the prelims of the NCAA 5,000-meter championships on Wednesday, June 11 at 8:50 p.m. on the campus of Drake University. The finals of the event take place on Friday, June 13 at 9:35 p.m. Sovacool has a personal and season-best time of 13:56.77 in the 5,000 meters, which ranks him 40th nationally going into the national championships. At the Mid-American Conference Championships in May, Sovacool swept the 1,500 and 5,000 meters, earning First-Team All-MAC honors. He also was USTFCCCA All-Mideast Region selection.

Veatch recorded a 3.49 GPA and majored in physical education. He was the 2008 MAC Outdoor Champion in the steeplechase, earning First-Team All-MAC plaudits and advancing to the NCAA Mideast Regional where he finished 21st in the event. In the steeplechase, Veatch finished in seventh place at the 114th Penn Relays and won the event at the Miami Team Challenge. A distance specialist, he also placed sixth at the MAC Championships in the 5,000 meters.
Krebs owns an impressive 3.95 GPA and majors in zoology. He was the champion in the 10,000 meters at the All-Ohio Championships and placed fifth in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 MAC Outdoor Championships. This season, Krebs also notched third-place finishes in the 5,000 meters at the Miami Team Challenge and the Southern Ohio Cup.
Silver has a double major in accountancy and finance and owns a 3.79 GPA. This season he placed fifth at the MAC Outdoor Championships in the 5,000 meters, while earning a second-place finish in the event at the All-Ohio Championships.
Kuhner majored in physical education and had a 3.20 GPA. He posted a third-place finish in the pole vault at the 2008 MAC Outdoor Championships and was an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifier in the event where he finished 14th. Kuhner also competed in the javelin at the MAC Championships, finishing in seventh place. He was the pole vault champion at the Billy Hayes Invitational and also at the Miami Team Challenge, while placing second in the event at the Southern Ohio Cup.
The Academic All-MAC team was voted on by the league's Faculty Athletic Representatives from among a list of student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. This year's squad includes 20 honorees due to ties.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
