OXFORD, Ohio - Six members of the Miami University men's track and field team will travel to the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 30-31 on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

The squad of six Miamians equals the program's most participants in the NCAA Track and Field Regionals since 2004, when Jake Kuhner, a qualifier in this year's pole vault, was a freshman.

Joining Kuhner on the trip to Fayetteville, Ark. are junior Pat Sovacool, senior Michael Veatch, senior Dan Beach, junior Kevin Dwyer and sophomore Travis Brumm.

Kuhner, a Pickertington, Ohio native is appearing in his second regional competition. He cleared the regional-qualifying mark in the final competition of the season when he posted a personal-best of 16-6 ¾ at the Mid-American Conference Championships to finish third. That performance ranks him ninth on the all-time performance list at Miami University. He previously competed in the 2004 NCAA Regionals.

Sovacool has been a stand out all year in both cross country and track and field for the Red and White and hit qualifying times in both the 5,000 meters and 1,500 meters. The junior from Lakewood, however, will just compete in the 5,000 at Arkansas. His best time of the year came at the legendary Penn Relays, running a 13:56.77 and finishing fifth among an elite field. He would later sweep the 5,000 and 1,500 meters at the MAC Championships. This will be Sovacool's third regional competition, having competed at regionals in the 1,500 meters in his first two seasons.

Veatch made his way into the regional field in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Veatch, like Sovacool, made a very strong showing at the 114th Penn Relays earlier this year in Philadelphia. A native of Middletown, Ohio, Veatch ran a personal best of 8:51.67, finishing seventh. This is the second-fastest time in Miami history in the steeplechase. He was also crowned a MAC Champion earlier this month at Bowling Green. Veatch is the top-ranked RedHawk in his respective event, ranking seventh among Mideast competitors.

Dan Beach, a senior from Arlington, Ohio, will compete in the hammer throw. Beach ranks third on the all-time performance list at Miami with his best throw of 194-9, set at the MAC Championships where he took third. He qualified for regional competition as early as April when he threw 192-1 at the University of Cincinnati.

Kevin Dwyer, a product of Arlington Heights, Ill., will compete in the javelin at regionals, while he is also bordering on an NCAA Nationals qualification in the decathlon. Dwyer's best mark of 207-11, set at the MAC Championships, qualified him for the regional competition and placed him second in the MAC. Dwyer set a personal best of 7066 points in the decathlon at the Clemson Relays and put himself in the running for the NCAA Championships.

Travis Brumm, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, Ind., will compete in the high jump at regionals. He qualified with a leap of 6-10 ¾ at the All-Ohio Championships in Cincinnati. Brumm enters the competition ranked 15th in the region.

The RedHawks depart for Arkansas on Wednesday and competition begins Friday at 3 p.m.

On Friday, Brumm will compete in the high jump starting at noon, while Dwyer will begin the javelin at 2:15 p.m. Sovacool starts the 5000 meters at 8:50 p.m.

Beach begins Saturday competition in the hammer at 11 a.m., while Kuhner begins the pole vault at 2:45 p.m. Veatch will compete in the steeplechase at 7:40 p.m.
