This Week: Miami University's men's track & field team heads to Indiana University's Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., on Friday, May 7. A non-scoring meet, the Hayes Invite serves as the RedHawks' final tune-up for the MAC Championships, May 13-15, in Oxford.
Head Coach Warren Mandrell On The Billy Hayes Invitational: "This is our final tune-up meet before we host the MAC Championships, so we're going to have a light squad this weekend. Quite a few of our guys are going to take the weekend off in preparation for the MAC's and for conflicts with final exams this week.
Last Time Out: The RedHawks finished second at the Southern Ohio Cup with the help of six first-place finishes and four regional-qualifiers. Freshman Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School) led the way, winning the hammer throw and achieving regional marks in both the hammer and shot put. Sophomore Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill./Geneva Community) also took first and qualified for regionals, shaving eight seconds off his 3,000m steeplechase time.
The Graduate(s): The Red and White says goodbye to six seniors this weekend when Miami University's holds its spring graduation ceremonies on Saturday. Seniors Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton), Edan Peleg (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack), Nick Somerville (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central), Will Stanley (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) and Drew Walter (West Chester, Ohio/Moeller) are all in the final year of their eligibility, while Kelly Tenbrink (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) has junior eligibility, but is expected to participate in the graduation ceremonies.
Somerville (jumps), and Peleg and Walter (javelin) represent the RedHawks almost exclusively in their events. Stanley (throws) and Tenbrink (pole vault) are supported by a pair of extraordinary freshman in Jake Dunkleberger and Jake Kuhner (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington), while Clark is part of a talented and deep distance corps.
Extending The Season: Five RedHawks have reached regional standards in six events this season, including four last weekend alone. At the Southern Ohio Cup, freshman Jake Dunkleberger qualified for the regional in the hammer throw for the fifth straight week, and surpassed the 54-0 1/2 qualifying mark in the shot put for the first time. Junior Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) posted a regional-qualifying height in the high jump for the second time this year, matching his 6-10 3/4 clearance from the Miami Invitational (April 10). Rounding out Saturday's qualifiers was Dan Huling who qualified in the 3,000m steeplechase in his second collegiate attempt at the event.
Previously this season, senior Nick Somerville and freshman Jake Kuhner had qualifiers in the long jump and pole vault, respectively. Somerville squeaked past the long jump standard (24-1) with a 24-1 3/4 jump, while Kuhner equaled the 16-4 3/4 mark at the All-Ohio Championships (April 17).
Home-Track Advantage?: The Mid-American Conference announced the relocation of this year's outdoor conference championship to Miami University. The event was initially awarded to Western Michigan but delays in construction to the WMU facilities caused the relocation to Miami's George L. Rider Track. The 2004 MAC Outdoor Championships are scheduled for May 13-15. Oxford last hosted the outdoor championships in 2001.
Up Next: The RedHawks host the 2004 Outdoor MAC Championship, May 13-15, at George L. Rider Track. Miami is looking to win its 15th MAC Championship, and first since 1993.
