OXFORD - Competing in its final tuneup prior to the conference meet, the Miami University men's track and field team head to Bloomington, Ind. this weekend for the Billy Hayes Invitational. It will be Miami's final regular season meet before it hosts the Mid-American Conference Championships May 10-12 in Oxford.
The Billy Hayes Invitational marks Miami's sixth meet of the outdoor season, with the RedHawks competing in a non-team scored meet last weekend at Butler's Stan Lyons Invitational. In Indianapolis, only four Miamians entered in events, with junior Dan Beach turning in a career-best toss in the hammer throw (181-1). Junior Brandon Kistler added a career-best time and fifth-place in the 100 meters (10.92), while junior Jake Kuhner finished fourth in the pole vault (15-7) and freshman Chris Maloney placed 16th in the 110-meter hurdles.
Miami will be competing in its first full team meet since finishing seventh at the All-Ohio Championships on April 21. At the All-Ohio, junior Michael Veatch turned in a regional-qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while sophomore Pat Sovacool and junior Bryan Ferres turned in first-place performances in the 5,000 meters and javelin, respectively. Veatch is the third Miamian this season to regionally qualify, joining Sovacool (1,500 meters) and senior Tom Herrmann (high jump).
Following the Billy Hayes Invitational, Miami hosts the 2007 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 10-12 in Oxford. It is the first time since 2004 the meet is being held at George L. Rider Track.
