This Week: Miami University's men's track & field team travels to Athens, Ohio, for the annual Southern Ohio Cup, Saturday, May 1, in one-of-two remaining meets before the MAC Championships. The three-team meet features the RedHawks, Cincinnati and host Ohio. The format of the meet is unique in that the champion is determined by combining men's and women's team scores. Each of the three teams has claimed the cup in the past three years, with Miami winning in 2003.
Head Coach Warren Mandrell On The Southern Ohio Cup: "This is by far our smallest meet of the year. It's good because it will be a quick meet, but it also marks the fourth week in a row we'll be competing against UC. Last week's meet was low-key and we were able to rest some people, so this week we're looking to improve times and take this chance to go into a scored meet and compete."
Last Time Out: Freshman Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School) and senior Edan Peleg (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) were repeat winners in the hammer throw and javelin, respectively, to lead the RedHawks at the Cardinal Open. Senior Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) also won the 3,000m steeplechase to lead Miami at the non-scoring event.
At the prestigious Penn Relays, sophomores Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill./Geneva Community) and Chris Swisher (Milan, Ind./Milan) were joined by senior Jerry Claunch (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) in representing the Red and White in the 5,000m. Huling led the way with a fourth-place finish in the championship heat.
2003 Southern Ohio Cup: The RedHawks won seven events on the men's side to help win the Southern Ohio Cup last season at Cincinnati. Miami swept the distance events, and posted the top three finishers in the 1,500m, led by David Mitchell. Senior Nick Somerville (Indianapolis, Ind./Larence Central) and junior Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) are the only Red and White winners from last season that are competing at the event this season. Reynolds topped the high jump, while Somerville was victorious in the long jump.
Not A Bad Start: Freshman Jake Dunkleberger is off to a good start to his collegiate career. After four meets, the Georgia native remains undefeated in the hammer throw, has qualified for the regional meet at all four meets and is second in school history in the event. At the Duke Invitational (April 2), he threw 197-6 to put himself second in the MU record books. Two weeks later, Dunkleberger topped that with a throw of 202-1 in winning the All-Ohio Championship.
Home-Track Advantage?: The Mid-American Conference announced the relocation of this year's outdoor conference championship to Miami University. The event was initially awarded to Western Michigan but delays in construction to the WMU facilities caused the relocation to Miami's George L. Rider Track. The 2004 MAC Outdoor Championships are scheduled for May 13-15. Oxford last hosted the outdoor championships in 2001.
Up Next: The RedHawks final tune-up before the MAC Championships is the Indiana Invitational, May 7, in Bloomington, Ind.
