CLEVELAND - After winning the high jump with a clearance of 6-8 3/4 at the Southern Ohio Cup, Miami University senior Tom Herrmann (Upper Arlington, Ohio) has been tabbed as the Mid-American Conference Field Athlete of the Week. It is the first career weekly conference honor for Herrmann.
As one of five Miamians to post individual wins at the Southern Ohio Cup, Herrmann's first-place clearance marked the second straight week he has topped 6-8 in the high jump. After entering the season with a personal-best of 6-8 3/4, Herrmann has matched or exceeded that height in each of the first two meets of the 2007 outdoor season, including a regional-qualifying and career-best clearance of 6-10 3/4 at the Wake Forest Open.
By virtue of his regional-qualifying height, Herrmann will compete in his first career regional meet May 25-26 in Columbia, Mo. He is the only Miamian from the men's track and field team to qualify regionally through the first two meets of the season.
Herrmann is the first men's track and field athlete to earn MAC Athlete of the Week honors since April 11, 2006 when Dan Huling was named the MAC Track Athlete of the Week.
Herrmann and the RedHawks were scheduled to compete at the Cincinnati Invitational this weekend but have pulled out due to the wintry weather. They will compete next when they host the Miami Invitational April 14 in Oxford.
