OXFORD, Ohio - Competing in its second meet of the outdoor season, the Miami University men's track and field team travels to Athens to face Ohio University and the University of Cincinnati Saturday in the Southern Ohio Cup. The meet kicks off with the hammer throw at 12:30 p.m. and features 19 track and field events.

Tabbed fifth in the Mid-American Conference preseason poll, Miami opened its outdoor season last weekend at the Wake Forest Open. In Winston-Salem, sophomore Pat Sovacool was the highest placing Miamian with a second-place finish in the 1,500 meters, while senior Tom Herrmann (high jump) and junior Michael Veatch (steeplechase) each added fourth-place finishes. Herrmann's clearance in the high jump (6-10 3/4) was a career-best and regional-qualifying height, as he became the first Miamian to qualify for the NCAA MidEast Regional meet to be held May 25-26 in Columbia, Mo.

Other impressive showings at the Wake Forest Open included a sixth-place finish from junior Jake Kuhner in the pole vault (15-11), a seventh-place finish from freshman Travis Brumm in the high jump (6-8 3/4) and an eighth-place clocking from sophomore Kevin Silver in the 3,000 meters (8:33.38).

Miami has finished second at the Southern Ohio Cup in each of the past five seasons, including 2006 when it posted seven individual wins. Sovacool is the only active RedHawk to post a win at last season's Southern Ohio Cup, as he placed first in the 1,500 meters.
