AUSTIN, Texas - Miami University freshman Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School) became the first hammer throw all-American in school history with a sixth-place finish in the finals of 2004 NCAA Championships Saturday afternoon in Austin. Dunkleberger established a new school mark in doing so, throwing 213-7.

Dunkleberger's first throw of the day spanned 213-4, placing him sixth after the semifinals, and advancing him into the finals as part of the top nine. On his first toss of the finals, he bettered his mark by three inches, establishing a new Miami standard of 213-7.

The only freshman among the 12-man field, Dunkleberger became Miami's first all-American since Mike Berwanger (discus) in 1994, and the first athlete in school history to achieve the honor in the hammer throw.

His most recent accolades cap a phenomonal freshman year in which he won his first Mid-American Conference Championship and resetting the school record in the event three times over the past two weeks. The Georgia native's previous record throw was 210-5.

Thomas Freeman of Manhattan went on to win the event with a throw of 232-2, dethroning the 2003 champion, Lucais MacKay from Georgia, who took fourth. CBS will be broadcasting the 2004 NCAA Championships on Saturday, June 19, at 4 p.m. EST.
