DES MOINES, Iowa - Miami University junior Kevin Dwyer ended day one of the decathlon by climbing five spots to 21st place at the 2008 NCAA outdoor track and field championships on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday.

In the first event, Dwyer scored 786 points with a time of 11.34 seconds in the 100-meter dash, finishing sixth in the third heat and 21st overall. In the long jump, the junior registered 709 points with a mark of 21-6, coming on his third and final leap. He ended fourth in the second flight and 16th overall.

Dwyer had a throw of 40-4 ¾ in the shot put, scoring 625 points and placing 21st out of the decathletes with his best mark, again, coming on his final attempt.

The RedHawk had the fifth-best performance in the high jump, clearing 6-6 ¼ and scoring 794 points. Dwyer passed on the first four heights before clearing 6-1 ½ on one attempt before doing likewise at 6-2 ¾. It took two attempts for Dwyer to clear 6-4 but just one to clear 6-5 before he cleared h 6-6 ¼ on his second try.

In the final event of the day, Dwyer finished the 400-meter dash in 53.78 seconds, scoring 649 points. He placed fourth in the third heat and 23rd overall.

The final five events of the decathlon will begin at 10:45 a.m. tomorrow. The decathletes will compete in the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and, finally, the 1,500-meter run.
