AUSTIN, Texas - Miami University freshman Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School) advanced to the next round of the NCAA Championships with an 11th-place showing in the preliminary round Thursday evening in Austin. The top 12 throwers advanced to Saturday night's round, which widdles the field down to nine competitors for the finals.

The Red and White record holder in the event, Dunkleberger was the only freshman to advance, throwing 206-8 to take 11th. The top 12 throwers advanced to the next round on Saturday, where each will be given three throws. The top nine then go on to the finals. Dunkleberger is looking to become the first hammer throw all-American in school history, and first all-American in any event since Mike Berwanger (discus) in 1994. To do so, he must finish among the top eight American-born athletes in Saturday night's finals.

Also competing on Thursday was junior Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East). The MAC Champion in the high jump, Reynolds failed to qualify for the next round by not clearing the initial height of 6-10 3/4. That figure was the regional-qualifying standard, while his personal record is 6-11, set at the regionals two weeks ago.

Action continues for the Red and White frosh on Saturday night at 5 p.m. EST. Results are available online immediately following the completion of each event via the University of Texas website at www.TexasSports.com/results/ncaa2004/.
