Running in one of two preliminary heats of the 5,000 meters, Miami University senior Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill.) finished second in his heat with a time of 14:03.27 Wednesday night at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Clocking in with the 10th-fastest time overall, Huling secured a spot in the 5,000-meter finals that are slated for Friday at 10:30 p.m. (EDT).

One season after a 26th-place showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Huling guaranteed himself his highest-ever national track finish with his performance at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. Only Richard Kipligat of Iona (14:02.21) finished ahead of Huling in the event's first heat, as Huling was one of 16 athletes to qualify for the finals. The top six finishers from each heat plus the next four best times advanced to the 5,000-meter finals.

After becoming the first men's track athlete in school history to win three individual Mid-American Conference Track Titles in the same season, Huling heads into Friday's finals seeking to put the finishing touches on a storybook senior season. Huling started his senior year by becoming the first Miami cross country runner since 1980 to win the MAC Championship and garner All-American honors in the same season, and after setting three school records between the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, he now has the opportunity to become a dual All-American in cross country and track and field.

The final collegiate race of Huling's storied Miami career will start at 10:30 p.m. (EDT) Friday night in Sacramento. Live results are available at ncaasports.com.
