FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Miami University junior Pat Sovacool has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships by finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters at the Mideast Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. on Friday night.
The Lakewood, Ohio product finished with a time of 14:12.84, just nine seconds behind the winner. Sovacool ran in the lead pack the entire race, even pushing the pace himself before the top-six runners distanced themselves from the pack. He qualified for nationals by nearly three seconds, as the sixth place finisher had a time of 14:15.67.
Sovacool's run at the national championship will take place in Des Moines, Iowa. Prelims for the 5,000 meters takes place on Wednesday, June 11, while the finals will be run on Friday, June 13.
Miami sophomore Travis Brumm cleared 6-9 in the high jump competition, finishing in a tie for sixth place.
Brumm cleared the opening height of 6-9 on his first attempt to earn a spot in the top-five after 10 competitors could not clear opening bar on their first attempt. After missing on three tries at 6-11, Brumm fell in a jump-off for fifth-place spot and a ticket to the NCAA National Championships when Jason House of Southern cleared 6-11 on his first attempt and Brumm and four others missed.
Brumm's performance is made more impressive today when noting that he came into Friday's competition ranked 15th in the region and bypassed several higher-ranked competitors to finish in the tie for sixth.
Senior Kevin Dwyer placed 19th in the javelin with a toss of 188-6 which is the third-longest throw of his career. Dwyer managed to beat out the MAC champion, Akron's Tyler Sweet, who took 24th at 182-1. Louisiana-Monroe's Jeffrey Kent took the regional with a throw of 233-5.
