BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill./Geneva Community) took sixth place in the steeplechase, just missing a bid to the NCAA Championships to lead three athletes from Miami University's men's track & field team on the final day of the 2004 NCAA Men's Track & Field Mideast Regional, Saturday, at Louisiana State University.
In his first season competing in the 3,000m steeplechase, Huling finished the distance in 9:06.17, just four seconds back of fifth place. The top five from each regional advance to the national meet in Texas.
Miami also had two athletes competing in the pole vault, with junior Kelly Tenbrink (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) leading the way in a tie for 12th. Tenbrink finished with a final height of 15-11 1/4, competing in first regional meet. Freshman Jake Kuhner (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) failed to register a height for the RedHawks.
Day one of the meet saw two 'Hawks qualify for the national meet in junior Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and freshman Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School). Reynolds cleared a personal-best 6-11 in the high jump to tie for fourth, while Dunkleberger took third in the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 210-5 to advance.
To qualify for the NCAA Championship meet, an athlete must finish in the top five of their regional, or be ranked among the top six to eight athletes in the nation that did not qualify at the regionals. For both RedHawks, this is their first trip to the national meet which is hosted by the University of Texas, June 9-12, in Austin, Texas.
