BATON ROUGE, La. - Freshman Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School) topped the 15-year old Miami University men's hammer throw record and was one of two RedHawks to qualify for the NCAA Championships on the first day of the NCAA Men's Track & Field Regional, Friday, at Louisiana State University. Three more 'Hawks aim to qualify when action resumes Saturday, May 29.
After flirting with the school mark throughout his freshman campaign, Dunkleberger threw 210-5 to take third place, just two inches out of second. Entering the weekend, Dunkleberger's top throw had been 205-2, which netted him his first MAC Championship two weeks ago. Dennis Kline had set the previous standard of 206-7 in 1989. He also competed in the shot put, taking 32nd with a throw of 48-5 1/2.
Joining the Georgia native at the NCAA Championships is junior Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East). Reynolds cleared a season-best 6-11 to take fourth place and advance. His previous best had been 6-10 3/4, the regional-qualifying mark, which he topped three times on the season.
To qualify for the NCAA Championship meet, an athlete must finish in the top five of their regional, or be ranked among the top six to eight athletes in the nation that did not qualify at the regionals. For both RedHawks, this is their first trip to the national meet which is hosted by the University of Texas, June 9-12, in Austin, Texas.
Senior Nick Somerville (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) also competed on the first day of the regionals, leaping 22-5 1/4 and tying for 26th in the long jump.
Day two of the regional meet features three Miamians competing in two events. Sophomore Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill./Geneva Community) competes in the 3,000m steeplechase, while the Red and White has a pair of pole vaulters in freshman Jake Kuhner (Pickeringon, Ohio/Pickerington) and junior Kelly Tenbrink (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) looking to go to the national meet.
