Final Track Results
OXFORD, Ohio -- The third day of the 2001 Mid-American Conference Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships began like the other two days with poor weather, but by the end of the competition the sun was shining on two teams and several individual champions.
Eastern Michigan and Ball State took home the team championships for the men's and women's teams, respectively. EMU finished with a team score of 155, while BSU breezed by the competition with a score of 187.50. The women finished 11th at last year's championship with a score of 13.5. The men's squad also made tremendous strides this season by going from 10th place last year to seventh place this year, finishing with a score of 61.
Freshman Nick Somerville (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) won the lone Miami men's championship by taking first-place honors in the long jump of 24-9 1/4. Besides taking home a MAC championship, he also broke the Miami school record in the long jump. Somerville's previous best mark this season was 23-10, a mark which he set last weekend at the Indiana Invitational.
Senior Carrie Mitchell (Erie, Pa./McDowell) closed out her career on Saturday by finishing second in the triple jump with a mark of 41-1 1/2. Mitchell's biggest rival Kia Flowers of Kent State edged her in the competition, finishing with a mark 41-6 1/2. Mitchell finished the year with the longest jump in the conference (41-9 3/4) and Miami's all-time record.
In other men's action, senior Nick Iagulli (Toledo, Ohio/Southview) finished second in the 800-meter dash with a time of 1:52.57, which was a season-best mark for him. Sophomore Brian Godsey (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) earned his weekend's second second-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, finishing with a time of 14:44.88.
In other women's action, freshman Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), who was named the MAC Women's Most Outstanding Athlete of the Meet, finished third and eighth, respectively, in the 5,000- and 1,500-meter races. Freshman Erin Connolly (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) and sophomore Kate Christoff (Lima, Ohio/Central Catholic) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-meter low hurdles. Connolly finished with a time of 14.57, and Christoff completed the sprint in 14.63.
