BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - With a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Michael Veatch launched the Miami University men's track and field team into second place and within striking distance of first place Akron in the final event on Friday in day two of the MAC Track & Field Championships at Bowling Green State University.

Veatch finished in 9:06.49, edging out Eastern Michigan's Josh Karanja who ended in 9:08.11. Fellow Miamian Ryan Dezso secured second place with a season-best time of 9:18.27.

The RedHawks earned 17 team points in the decathlon. Kevin Dwyer became the first Miamian since Chad Ramlow in 1991 to win the MAC decathlon. Dwyer totaled 6706 points to secure first-place honors. Michael McCarty turned in impressive freshman performance, scoring 6312 points, good for third place, while Mitch Reynolds took eighth place with 5593 points.

On Friday, Dwyer ran the 110-hurdles in 15.32 and went 122-10 in the discus. He cleared 15-1 in the pole vault and threw 192-5 in the javelin. He ended with 1500 meters in 5:39.20. McCarty won the 110-hurdles with a time of 15.10.

Dwyer scored a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 207-11. Jake Kuhner took seventh in the javelin with a mark of 177-11.

Josh Rees took fourth in the long jump with a performance of 22-5 ¼. Adam Ruiz was sixth in the shot put with a mark of 52-10 ¼.

Pat Sovacool cruised into the 1500-meter finals with an easy (for him) 4:05.01 in the prelims.

Jesse Whitman qualified for the 110-meter finals with a 15.01 in the 110-hurdle prelims. Matt Kessler did likewise in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.96.

 

 

Justin Eddie qualified for the 400-meter finals with a 48.53, while Jason Coniglio qualified for the 100-meter finals with a time of 10.96.

Cedric Diakabana qualified for the 800-meter finals with a season-best of 1:52.64.

Miami's 68 team points through two days puts them six points behind Akron going into Saturday's final events.

Events on Saturday begin at the Whittacker Track in Bowling Green at 10:30 a.m.
