TOLEDO, Ohio - Senior Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill.) won the conference title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and sophomore Kevin Dwyer (Arlington Heights, Ill.) finished as the runner-up in the decathlon as the Miami University men's track and field team finished the second day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Miami is tied for second with Eastern Michigan (51 points) heading into the final day, with both teams trailing first-place Kent State (72 points).
Huling won his second MAC track title in as many days Friday at the UT Track, clocking in with a first-place time of 8:44.37 in the steeplechase and earning 10 team points. With his gold-medal performance, Huling became the first Miami athlete since Brian Carlton in 1985 to win two MAC individual titles in the same season. Carlton won both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the 1985 conference meet.
Dwyer posted a new career-best score with his silver-medal performance in the decathlon, turning in a tally of 6,344 points. On the second day of the decathlon, Dwyer won the discus (116-11) and also placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.34), fifth in the javelin (146-6), sixth in the pole vault (12-5 1/2) and ninth in the 1,500 meters (5:47.60). Dwyer earned eight team points for his effort.
Senior Ceith Creekmur (Naperville, Ill.) was Miami's final point scorer, earning five team points with his fourth-place score of 6,177 in the decathlon. Creekmur won the javelin (170-7) and also placed second in the discus (115-2), fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:51.96) and seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (16.34).
In addition to its three point scorers, Miami qualified eight athletes for the finals of tomorrow's track events. The RedHawks top scoring event looks to be the 1,500 meters, as senior David Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill.), freshman Pat Sovacool (Lakewood, Ohio) and senior Chris Swisher (Milan, Ind.) all placed among the top eight in the preliminary heat. Mitchell was the top RedHawk with a first-place time of 4:01.46, while Sovacool and Swisher finished second (4:02.28) and fifth (4:01.49), respectively.

Miami's also placed one athlete in the finals of the 200 meters, 400 meters and 800 meters. Senior Michael Watts (Randolph, N.J.) and Heniz VonEckartsberg (Dublin, Ohio) each finished third in the 200 meters (21.76) and 400 meters (48.21), respectively, while freshman Sam Cosgrove (Hilliard, Ohio) rounded out the final's qualifiers with a seventh-place time in the 800 meters (1:54.52).
Fourteen different events are slated for the final day of competition, including the finals of the 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and 800 meters. Other events scheduled for Saturday are the high jump, triple jump, discus, pole vault, 4x100 meter relay and 4x400 meter relay.
