Freshman Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School) won the MAC Championship in the hammer throw, and fellow frosh Ryan Hutton (Columbus, Ind./North) finished just outdie the scoring to lead Miami University's men's track & field team to fourth place on the first day of the 2004 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, in Oxford. Central Michigan leads the men's side with 26 points, while the RedHawks sit fourth with 10.
Dunkleberger became the first Miamian to win the conference title in the hammer throw since Dennis Kline in 1990 with his throw of 205-2. He entered the meet as the only MAC athlete to top 200 feet on the year, but used his second-to-last throw to top defending champion Greg Corbitt (202-9). With his throw Dunkleberger also continues to move closer to Kline's school mark in the event of 206-7.
In the only other scored event of the day, Hutton took ninth in the 10,000m with a time of 31:43.88.
Behind the Eagles in the standings is Central Michigan in second with 21 points, ahead of Akron with 16. Miami is fourth, while Kent State and Ball State are tied for fifth with three and Western Michigan is seventh with one. Two teams did not score on day one.
The men's decathlon got underway today, and after four events, sophomore Ceith Creekmur (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) leads the Red and White trio. Creekmur won the decathlon high jump, clearing 6-4 3/4, and has 2,870 points. Sophomore Kayne Dakoski (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor) has 2,734 points and junior Charles Davis (Riverdale, Ohio/Stebbins) has 2,357.
Day two of the MAC Championships gets underway at 10 a.m. when the decathlon resumes. The first preliminary is the 1,500m at 12:20 p.m., while the first scored event of the day is the javelin at 2 p.m.
