BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Chris Swisher (Milan, Ind.) and freshman Pat Sovacool (Lakewood, Ohio) turned in regional-qualifying performances in the 1,500 meters and the Miami University men's track and field team tallied 11 additional top-10 finishes as it wrapped up competition Friday at the Billy Hayes Invitational.
Swisher and Sovacool became the second and third Miami athletes to qualify for the NCAA MidEast Regional (May 26-27) with their performances in the 1,500 meters. Sovacool clocked in with a third-place and career-best time of 3:46.48, and Swisher added a fifth-place and season-best mark of 3:46.85. It is the second consecutive season that Swisher has qualified for the regional meet in the 1,500 meters.
Miami turned in a pair of top-10 finishes in the sprints, including senior Heinz VonEckartsberg's (Dublin, Ohio) ninth-place and career-best time in the 400 meters (48.21). Senior Michael Watts (Randolph, N.J.) clocked in with a 10th-place time in the 200 meters (21.88), while sophomore James Harris (Westlake, Ohio) added a 16th-place finish in the 100 meters (10.97). Harris' time was a career-best mark and tied Watts for the top Miami time in the 100 meters this season.
In addition to Miami's regional-qualifying times in the 1,500 meters, it posted two top-10 performances in the distance events. Freshman Kevin Silver (Sandusky, Ohio) turned in a fourth-place and career-best time in the 3,000 meters (8:41.69), and junior Justin Campbell (East Liverpool, Ohio) posted a third-place mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:34.48).
Rounding out the track events, Miami received a ninth-place and season-best time of 14.92 from senior Eric Bowman (Dayton, Ohio) in the 110-meter hurdles, a 16th-place time of 55.78 from senior Bobby Houston (Hilliard, Ohio) in the 400-meter hurdles and an eighth-place showing from the 4x100 meter relay team (42.26).

In the jumps, senior Ryan Phillips (Germantown, Ohio) was the top Miami finisher with a ninth-place distance in the long jump (21-4), while freshman Thomas Williman (Van Wert, Ohio) added an 11th-place distance in the triple jump (40-5 1/2). Senior Ceith Creekmur (Naperville, Ill.) also tallied a 10th-place height in the pole vault (14-5 1/4), while sophomore Dan Beach (Arlington, Ohio) was the top RedHawk in both the discus (154-7) and the hammer throw (163-10). Beach's discus distance was a season-best mark.
After compiling 25 individual wins in six outdoor track and field meets, the RedHawks finish their season by traveling to Toledo, Ohio for the MAC Championships (May 11-13). Miami finished fourth at last season's conference meet.
