BLOOMINGTON - Sophomore Ryan Dezso won the steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:31.14 and the Miami University men's track and field team registered 12 top-10 finishes as it competed at Indiana's Billy Hayes Invitational Friday. Freshman Adam Martin also placed first in the open section of the 1,500 meters, joining Dezso as an event winner in Bloomington.

Dezso topped the 12-athlete field in the steeplechase and was one of two Miamians place in the top five in the event, as junior Justin Campbell added a fourth-place time (9:41.11). Adding Miami's other first-place finish at the meet was Martin, who added a first-place time of 3:58.22 in the open heat of the 1,500 meters. He was the top placing athlete in the seven-runner field.

In addition to Dezso, Campbell and Martin, Miami turned in five top-10 performances in the track events. The RedHawks had a pair of athletes place in the top eight in the 3,000 meters, with freshman Paul Krebs and sophomore Kevin Silver finishing fifth (8:57.40) and seventh (9:13.25), respectively. Miami also received a seventh-place clocking from the 4x100 meter relay team (43.46), an eight-place performance from Chris Maloney in the 110-meter hurdles (15.11) and a ninth-place time from sophomore Sam Cosgrove in the invitational heat of the 1,500 meters (3:51.45).

The field events saw Miami turn in four top-10 finishes, led by junior Jake Kuhner's third-place performance in the pole vault. Kuhner tied a season-best performance by clearing 4.90m. In the high jump, the RedHawks had freshman Travis Brumm and senior Tom Herrmann finish fourth (2.01m) and fifth (1.96m), respectively, while freshman Cooper Johansen added an eighth-place leap in the triple jump (12.61m).

 

 

With three regional qualifiers, Miami now sets its sights on the 2007 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which the RedHawks will host May 10-12 in Oxford. It is the first time since 2004 the event is being held at George L. Rider Track.
