ATHENS, Ohio - Sophomore Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill./Geneva Community) and freshman Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School) combined for three first-place finishes and three regional-qualifying marks in leading Miami University's men's track & field team at the Southern Ohio Cup, Saturday afternoon in Athens. The RedHawks took second on both the men's side and overall, as Cincinnati won the Southern Ohio Cup.
Huling, who won his first forray into the 3,000m steeplechase at the Miami Invitational, April 10, took first place in his second steeplechase, this time with a regional-qualifying time of 9:02.04. He was one of three 'Hawks in the top four, as senior Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) took second and freshman Justin Campbell (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) in fourth. In the hammer throw, Dunkleberger remained undefeated with a throw of 194-3, beating second place by 27-4, and qualifying for the regionals for the fifth consecutive weekend.
Dunkleberger also posted top-two finishes in the shot put and discus, qualifying for the regionals for the first time with a throw of 54-1 in the shot put and finishing behind first-place rob King (Moore's Hill, Ind./South Dearborn) in the discus. King threw 151-8 to win the event, while Dunkleberger cleared 147-4 for second. Senior Edan Peleg (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) won his third straight javelin event, throwing 179-5 to round out Miami's victorious throwers.
The RedHawks also excelled in the distance events, winning both the 1,500m and 5,000 in addition to the steeplechase. Sophomore Chris Swisher (Milan, Ind./Milan) won the 1,500 with a time of 3:50.19, as senior Jerry Claunch (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) took third in the event, crossing the line in 3:56.32. It was Claunch crossing the line first in the 5,000, finishing in 15:05.16, with freshman Ryan Hutton (Columbus, Ind./North) close behind in second at 15:19.81. Swisher took fifth in the event, with a time of 15:34.06.

Junior Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) rounded out the Red and White qualifiers, as he cleared 6-10 3/4 in the high jump for the second time this season. He previously reached the mark at the Miami Invitational. Each time he has taken second in the event based on the attempts at the height.
The RedHawks return to action at the Billy Hayes Invitational, May 7, in Bloomington, Ind. The meet is Miami's final tune-up before hosting the MAC Championships, May 13-15.
