CINCINNATI, Ohio - With the help of seven individual wins, including a pair by senior Kyle Kraus (Kingsville, Ontario) in the javelin and triple jump, the Miami University men's track and field team finished second at the Southern Ohio Cup Saturday. In a triangular meet with Cincinnati and Ohio, Miami garnered 143 points and finished 31 points behind first-place Cincinnati (174 points).

Kraus was the only Miami athlete to post multiple individual wins as he turned in first-place performances in both the javelin and triple jump. Kraus tallied a first-place distance of 174-10 in the javelin and added a season- and career-best distance of 44-7 in the triple jump. The pair of individual wins gave Kraus his second and third individual wins of the season.

In the track events, Miami turned in four top finishes, including a pair of individual wins in the hurdles. Senior Eric Bowman (Dayton, Ohio) clocked in with a season-best time of 15.02 in his victory in the 110-meter hurdles, while senior Bobby Houston (Hilliard, Ohio) added a first-place and season-best time of 54.53 in the 400-meter hurdles.

Miami's other top track finishes came in the distance events as freshman Pat Sovacool (Lakewood, Ohio) and senior Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill.) placed first in the 1,500 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively. Sovacool turned in a season-best time of 3:49.30 in his 1,500-meter win, while Huling clocked in at 9:09.89 in the steeplechase. Miami's two first-place finishes were part of a strong showing in the distance events that included a third-place finish from senior David Mitchell (Woodbridge, Ill.) in the 5,000 meters (15:28.13) and a third-place finish by sophomore Ben Robinson in the 800 meters (1:55.97)

The three sprint events featured a runner-up finish from senior Michael Watts (Randolph, N.J.) in the 100 meters (11.00), a fourth-place finish from Watts in the 200 meters (22.08) and a fifth-place time from senior Heinz VonEckartsberg (Dublin, Ohio) in the 400 meters (48.84). The RedHawks also placed second in both the 4x100 meter relay (42.06) and 4x400 meter relay (3:17.15).

Kraus had two of Miami's individual wins in the field events, with its other top finish coming from junior Tom Herrmann (Upper Arlington, Ohio) in the high jump. Herrmann matched his season-best with a leap of 6-8 3/4, a height Kraus also matched in the event, but he finished third behind Herrmann based on number of misses. Also in the jumps, senior Ryan Phillips (Germantown, Ohio) was the top Miami finisher in the long jump with a fifth-place showing (22-9), while senior Ceith Creekmur (Naperville, Ill.) added a third-place height in the pole vault (14-7 1/4). Creekmur's height was a season-best mark.

In the throws, sophomore Ryan Baker (Greenwood, Ind.) was the top Miami finisher with a fourth-place distance in the discus (138-10), while sophomore Dan Beach (Arlington, Ohio) was the top RedHawk with a fifth-place distance in the shot put (44-1 1/2).
