COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Five RedHawks won individual All-Ohio Championships to lead Miami University's men's track & field team to a second-place showing at the All-Ohio Championship meet Friday and Saturday in Columbus. The Red and White finished behind Cincinnati for the second weekend in a row, scoring 135 points to the Bearcats' 215.50.
Leading the RedHawk charge was freshman Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga.The Lovett School) and Ryan Hutton (Columbus, Ind./North). Dunkleberger won the hammer throw with a toss of 202-1, topping his previous collegiate best 197-6. Both throws have put Dunkleberger second in the Miami record books behind Dennis Kline's school-record throw of 206-7 in 1989. Hutton was victorious in the 10,000m, crossing the line in 31:39.23, 40 seconds ahead of second place.
Junior Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and sophomore Chris Swisher (Milan, Ind./Milan) each won events lead a bunch of Hawks atop their respective events. Reynolds took top honors in the high jump, clearing 6-8 3/4, while freshman Tom Herrmann (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Kyle Kraus (Kingville, Ontario/Kingville) both cleared 6-6 3/4, but finished tied for fourth and sixth, respectively, based on attempts. Swisher paced the field of the 1,500m to lead a contingent of three runners in the top four. Behind Swisher, who finished in 3:52.41, senior Jerry Claunch(West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) took third in 3:53.19 and sophomore Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill./Geneva Community) was fourth in 3:53.50.
Seniors Edan Peleg(Hackensack, Ohio/Hackensack) and Drew Walter (West Chester, Ohio/Moeller) took first and third in the javelin for Miami. Peleg won an All-Ohio Championship with his throw of 181-5, while Walter threw 176-10 for third in the event. In the pole vault, freshman Jake Kuhner (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) and junior Kelly Tenbrink (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) also finished among the top three. Kuhner topped the 16-0 mark for the second time this season to take second with a final height of 16-4 3/4, bettering his previous best of 16-0 3/4. Both heights make Kuhner ninth in school history in the event. Tenbrink finished in a tie for third, clearing 15-11 and bettering his personal best by four inches.

In the long jump, senior Nick Somerville(Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) cleared 24 feet for the first time this spring to take second place, while adding a sixth-place finish in the triple jump. His final distance in the long jump was 24-1 3/4, while he recorded a jump of 45-4 1/3 in the triple jump.
Behind UC and Miami in the 11-team field was Kent State in third with 101 points, Akron fourth with 92 and host Ohio State rounding out the top five with 89 points. Ashland, Findlay, Youngstown State, Ohio, Wright State and Central State also competed at the event, and completed the field, respectively.
Three more RedHawks added top-five finishes in senior Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Easton) and sophomores Eric Steyer(Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) and Eric Bowman (Dayton, Ohio/Dayton Christian). Clark took third in the steeplechase, completing the 3,000m in 9:28.92. Both Steyer and Bowman finished fifth in their events, leading a teammate in seventh. In the 800m, Steyer finished in 1:55.23, ahead of junior Steve Schilling (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) in 1:55.69, while Bowman and sophomore Bobby Houston (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) finished the 110m hurdles in 14.87 and 15.14, respectively.
Miami is back in action next weekend at both the prestigious Penn Relays and Louisville Invitational. Some of the team will compete at the Penn Relays Thursday through Saturday, while the remainder of the Hawks will compete in Louisville on Friday.
