OXFORD, Ohio - Sophomore Pat Sovacool regionally qualified with his first-place performance in the 1,500 meters and the Miami University men's track and field team turned in 12 top-three finishes as it placed second at the 13th Miami Invitational Saturday at the George L. Rider Track Complex. On a cold and rainy day in Oxford, Sovacool, junior Ben Robinson (800 meters) and junior Bryan Ferres (javelin) registered top individual finishes as the RedHawks finished as the runner-up in an 11-team field.
Qualifying for the NCAA MidEast Regional for the second straight season, Sovacool turned in a first-place time of 3:47.37 in the 1,500 meters. Just missing a personal-best performance in the event, Sovacool still eclipsed the regional-qualifying standard of 3:47.80, with his performance ranking among the top 35 nationally in the event. He is the second RedHawk to regionally qualify this season along with senior high jumper Tom Herrmann.
Joining Sovacool as top individual finishers were Robinson with his first-place clocking in the 800 meters (1:56.87) and Ferres with his first-place toss in the javelin (174-6). Robinson's performance was his first career individual track victory, while Ferres' throw was his second-best of the outdoor season.
Five Miamians turned in second-place finishes, with three coming in the track events and two in the field events. Freshman Kyle Alexander paced the sprints with his second-place finish in the 200 meters (22.90), while sophomore Sam Cosgrove added a runner-up time behind Robinson in the 800 meters (1:57.07). Herrmann and senior Dan Beach registered second-place performances in the high jump (6-6 3/4) and hammer throw (178-0), respectively, while the RedHawks' 4x400 meter relay team also turned in a second-place time (3:20.88).

Placing behind meet winner Cincinnati (213 points), Miami's second-place point total (125 points) was 19 better than third-place Buffalo (106 points).
The RedHawks continue their outdoor slate next weekend at the All-Ohio Championships (April 20).
