OXFORD, Ohio -
Sophomore Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School) turned in Miami's top performance at the Miami Invitational on Saturday, winning the shot put with a toss of 52-6 1/2, just under two feet short of qualifying for the NCAA Regional meet alongside his previous regionally-qualifying hammer performances.
Cincinnati, with 201 1/2 points, and Kent State, with 162, finished ahead of Miami, whose 149 1/2 points outgained seven other schools as Ohio, Louisville, Cedarville, Hillsdale, John Carroll, Valparaiso and Butler rounded out the field.
Miami earned 17 points between the three sprint events, led by eight points from junior Michael Watts (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) between the 100 and 200 meter races. All 14 of Miami's mid-distance points came in the 1500 from senior Chris Swisher (Milan, Ind./Milan), who finished second, and junior Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill./Geneva), who finished third in the sixth-fastest time in Miami history of 3:48.73. Swisher, who finished in 3:48.59, is already fourth on that list.
Sophomore Justin Campbell (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) contributed five of Miami's seven points in the two distance events, the 3000-meter steeplechase and the 5K run, with his fourth-place finish in the steeple event, and junior Eric Bowman (Dayton, Ohio/Dayton Christian) chipped in eight of Miami's 11 points in the two hurdle races with his runner-up finish in the 110-meter event. To close out the running events, Miami earned 11 points between the two relay races.
Senior Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and junior Ryan Phillips (Germantown, Ohio/Valley View) each earned second-place finishes to lead Miami's take in the three jumping events, as Reynolds placed runner-up in the high jump and Phillips did so in the long jump. Sophomore Jake Kuhner (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) matched that place in the pole vault for eight more RedHawk points.
After placing second in the hammer on Friday, Dunkleberger totaled 18 of Miami's 49 points in the four throwing events. Junior
Rob Prechtl (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) entered Miami's all-time list in the javelin with a ninth-best all-time 188-03 throw.
The RedHawks compete again next Friday and Saturday at the All-Ohio Championships at Ohio State.
