CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Decathletes on the Miami University men’s track and field team wrapped up competition at the Charlotte 49er classic Friday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of UNC-Charlotte, after competing in the first five events Thursday. The final five events were contested Friday.

Freshman Reggie Mitchell (Cincinnati, Ohio), who sat in third after Thursday’s events, finished in fourth with 6,064 points in his first collegiate decathlon, while redshirt sophomore Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) placed ninth with 5,181 points. Junior Michael McCarty (Hudson, Ohio), who was in second after the opening day, withdrew midway through Friday’s action while freshman Sam Wildeman (Naperville, Ill.) withdrew after the first event Thursday with a leg injury.

“Reggie had a really good decathlon, as we like to see our freshmen reach at least 6,000 points in their first meet and he did that,” said assistant coach Ceith Creekmur.

Mitchell, who won the long jump Thursday, took third in the 110m hurdles Friday in 15.93 to earn 741 points and help him to his fourth-place finish overall. Rudin tied for second in the discus Friday with a toss of 30.02m/98-6 and third in the javelin (48.58m/159-04), but was hurt by failing to record a height in the pole vault, after using a pole longer than normal. McCarty had won the 110m hurdles (14.88) and tied for second in the pole vault (4.10m/13-05.25) Friday prior to withdrawing.

West Virginia Wesleyan’s Ricky Kump won the decathlon with 6,569 points.

The rest of the RedHawk men’s track and field team gets the 2010 outdoor season underway Saturday, March 27 at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
