BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In just its second meet of the season, the Miami University men’s track and field team won the All-Ohio Indoor Championships, hosted by Bowling Green State University, Saturday at Perry Field House, topping 11 other schools from around the state.
The RedHawks totaled 176 points to claim the meet title while Ashland was second with 156 points. Malone took third while Findlay was fourth. Fellow Division I foes Xavier and Dayton placed fifth and seventh, respectively, while Mid-American Conference schools Ohio and Bowling Green, who had limited entrants, finished eighth and 10th, respectively.
“I was very pleased with our freshman. They were very competitive,” head coach Warren Mandrell said. “Every person we brought scored individually or on a relay team so we didn’t have a person on the bus that didn’t play a part in winning the meet.”
Junior Michael McCarty (Hudson, Ohio) won the heptathlon in come-from-behind fashion, as he stood in second after four events Friday night and still was in second heading into the final event, the 1000m, but did well enough in the race to win the seven-event competition with 5,217 points. He took first in the 60-meter dash and long jump portions of the heptathlon, including a personal-best indoor jump of 23-4.50 (7.12m).
In the high jump, the RedHawks took three of the top four spots, as junior David Serrano (Pickerington, Ohio) won with a personal-best leap of 6-9.5 (2.07m), while senior Travis Brumm (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshman John Cantwell (Holland, Pa.) took third and fourth, respectively. The long jump saw junior Josh Rees (Marysville, Ohio) take second with a jump of 22-6.25 (6.86m) while McCarty was third and junior John Gausmann (Naperville, Ill.) took fourth in the weight throw with a personal-best heave of 53-8.25 (16.36m), four feet better than his previous best.
On the track, Miami also picked up a pair of first-place finishes, as freshman
Jack Spilman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) won the 800m in 1:56.54 with a come-from-behind lunge at the finish, winning by .05 seconds. In the 5000m run, which was the RedHawks’ highest-scoring event of the meet, senior
Paul Krebs (Kettering, Ohio) took first in 15:04.03, while fellow senior
Ryan Dezso (Copley, Ohio) placed second in 15:13.04 and freshman
Matt Marol (Evanston, Ill.) crossed in fourth just over six ticks later.
The RedHawks had three people qualify for the 60-meter dash finals, led by junior Justinn Eddie (Cleveland, Ohio) in second (7.01) while Rees finished sixth and freshman Reggie Mitchell (Cincinnati, Ohio) eighth. Junior Dan Hull (Warren, Ohio) was the runner-up in the 400m dash in 50.47 while freshmen Alieu Sillah (Richmond, Va.) and Alex Trent (Middletown, Ohio) also scored in the race.
In the 3000m run, juniors Michael Perry (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Robbie Fisher (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) placed third (8:29.55) and fourth (8:30.93), respectively, while in the 60-meter hurdles Mitchell took third and fellow freshman Tyler Nichols (South Euclid, Ohio) was fourth, as the two were separated by a two-thousandths of a second (8.482 to 8.490).
Miami also took second in both the 4x400 relay and the distance medley relay.
The RedHawks compete in their third and final indoor meet allowed by NCAA rules next weekend at the Capital University Meindl Last Call meet in Columbus, Ohio. Miami then opens its outdoor season March 27 at Vanderbilt.
