Junior Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) led five RedHawks with top-three finishes as Miami University's men's track & field team opened its season at the Rod McCravy Memorial Friday and Saturday. The meet was a non-scoring affair and was hosted by the University of Kentucky.
Reynolds won the high jump for the Red and White, tying his personal best with a height of 6-10 1/4. Sophomore Kyle Kraus (Kingsville, Ontario/Kingsville) tied for second, clearing 6-8 1/4. Sophomore Eric Steyer (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) also posted a second-place finish, completing the 800-meter run in 1:52.58, ahead of junior transfer Steve Schilling (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) in sixth place.
The RedHawks also finished favorably in the distance events, with a quartet of top-ten finishers. Sophomore Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill./Geneva Community) took third in the 3,000-meter, crossing the line in 8:22.17, while senior Jerry Claunch (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) finished ninth. In the mile run, senior Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) and sophomore Chris Swisher (Milan, Ind./Milan) finished ninth and 10th, respectively for Miami.
Senior Nick Somerville (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) finished third in the long jump, while placing seventh in the triple jump. His long jump registered at 23-3 1/2, while his triple jump spanned 43-3. Sophomore James Findlay (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) also placed in the top-10, finishing ninth in the weight throw.
Miami returns to action at the Indiana Invitational, Feb. 6-7, in Bloomington, Ind. It is the RedHawks' second of three indoor meets before the outdoor track season starts Saturday, April 3, at the Duke Invitational.
