FINDLAY, Ohio - Four members of the Miami University men’s track and field team kicked off the RedHawks’ 2010 track and field season by competing Friday night at the Findlay Indoor Classic at the Malcolm Athletic Center. The meet is the first of three indoor meets Miami is allowed to compete in, per NCAA rules, in preparation for the outdoor season.

Freshman Reggie Mitchell (Cincinnati, Ohio) took second in the pentathlon, racking up 3,160 points in his first collegiate competition. Mitchell took second in four of the five events while taking third in the shot put.

In the weight throw, junior John Gausmann (Naperville, Ill.) was Miami’s top finisher, placing 16th with a heave of 49-9.75 (15.18m), while freshman Lucas Ferguson (Mount Vernon, Ohio) was 21st with a toss of 46-10.25 (14.28m) in his first collegiate event. Sophomore Nathan Hoch (Logan, Ohio) fouled on his attempt and did not record a mark.

The rest of the RedHawks will compete for the first time this season Saturday, as the Findlay Classic continues beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the long jump, while action on the track begins at 11:25 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles prelims. The meet concludes at 6 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.
