OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University swimmers Chris Heaton (Sr., Centerville) and Malarie Schmidt (Sr., Batavia, IL) have swept Mid-American Conference Men's and Women's Swimmer of the Week honors for their performances at last week's record-breaking Miami Invitational.
Heaton set a MAC, school, pool and meet record with his performance on December 6 in the three-meter diving event at the 15th Annual Miami Invitational with a score of 406.85 (the former record was 357.075 by Dave Keener of Ball State in 1993.). Heaton placed second behind teammate Jim Beres in the one-meter diving event. It's the second time this season that Heaton has been honored by the MAC. Miami's DAVE BROWN and MIKE CARROLL also have been named MAC Swimmer of the Week in 2008-09.
Schmidt re-wrote her own MAC record in the 100 backstroke finals (:55.07) on December 5. On Friday morning in the prelims of that event, she broke the MAC record with a time of :55.25. As a member of Miami's 400 medley relay team, Schmidt helped the RedHawks set a MAC record (3:41.98). Three other relay teams (200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay) on which she swam set Miami records. Altogether, Schmidt participated in nine finals, winning five and finishing second in a sixth race. Schmidt joins teammates Kasey Carpenter and Allison Stevens as MAC honorees in 2008-09.
The next competition for both Coach Pete Lindsay's men's team and Coach Dave Jennings's women's team in January 16 in dual meets at the University of Cincinnati.
