RedHawks Climb to Second-Place Finish at Miami Invitational: The RedHawks left the Nixon Aquatic Center in third place on Friday night of the Miami Invitational but came back on Saturday morning in a tie for fourth due to a scoring error regarding the first night's relay races. It turned out only to be another step the Red and White used to climb up to second place by Sunday night. Kenyon College won the meet by 646.5 points, but the RedHawks held second with a margin of 120 points over Cleveland State. In the individual swimming events, Miami earned seven A-final berths, three by freshmen. Theo Kuczek finished seventh in the 200 Back and eighth in the 200 Breast, while classmate Blake Norman took fifth in the 200 Breast.
Storylines:
1. Three RedHawks, including sophomore Griffin Marshall, junior Scott Robson and senior Jason Krasula went to the U.S. Open in San Antonio, Texas, over the weekend, competing against some of the nation's top collegians and club swimmers. Krasula competed in two backstroke events, Robson swam in one butterfly event and time trialed in another, and Marshall turned in Miami's top finish by place, coming in 10th in the 200-Meter Breaststroke. He also swam the 100 Breast.
2. The RedHawks are off until the Ed Kennedy Relays at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Dec. 31. The meet is part of the team's winter training trip before the RedHawks return to dual meet competition at Cincinnati with Kenyon on Jan. 14, 2005.
Coach's Corner: Pete Lindsay enters his 20th season at Miami having led Miami to 17 top-three finishes at the MAC Championships in his 19 previous seasons. In 1997 and 1999, Lindsay guided Miami to its last two conference titles, and the RedHawks have been the only team to knock Eastern Michigan off the top of the MAC podium since 1980. Last season, Lindsay helped Miami to a 4-1 record in the MAC and boasted a three-time gold medalist in Andrew Keefe, who won the 50, 100 and 200 Free races at the 2004 MAC meet. Lindsay has coached 74 Mid-American Conference individual champions, seven MAC Men's Swimmers of the Year and two of Miami's six MAC Championship teams. He has garnered four MAC Coach of the Year awards, earning the honor in 1991, 1994, 1996 and 1999. Lindsay, who teaches in the physical education department, is the only Miami head coach that is a full-time instructor at the University.
