OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami men's swimming and diving team travels to West Lafayette and Notre Dame, Ind. for a pair of meets this weekend. The team will face Purdue on Friday at 5 p.m. before heading to Notre Dame to take on the Irish and Cleveland State in a tri-meet on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The RedHawks are coming off a convincing 143.5-115.5 win over Xavier last weekend. The Red and White opened the season with a win over Evansville and a loss to Southern Illinois Oct. 9-10.
"This two-meet, three-school road weekend will be our toughest challenge prior to the MAC championships," head coach Pete Lindsay said. "We are looking for some strong matchups in the pool and will see outstanding diving competition on both days. This weekend will be great preparation and a benchmark for us as we get into the dual meet portion of the season."
Friday's matchup will be Purdue's first dual meet of the season. They opened the year with a first-place finish at the Indiana Intercollegiate Invitational over Evansville, Indianapolis, IUPUI and Valparaiso. The Boilermakers won 11 of the meet's 12 events.
Saturday's meet will be the third of the season for Notre Dame. They opened the season with the Dennis Stark Relay Invitational, finishing second to Michigan. Other teams competing were Oakland, Valparaiso and Cleveland State. Last weekend, Notre Dame defeated Oakland 179-119.
Cleveland State finished fifth at Notre Dame's Dennis Stark Relays to open the season and defeated 134-105 last Saturday. The Vikings are coached by Miami alum Wally Morton ('70), who was a member of Miami's Mid-American Conference championship teams in 1966-67 and 1967-68.
This season the RedHawks have been led by senior Dave Brown, junior Jason Hass, and sophomores James Beres and Chris Gunnels. Beres and Hass have three wins apiece while Brown and Gunnels each have two.
Among MAC swimmers, Brown has the second fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle (21.48), Hass has the third fastest time in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.45), and Gunnels has the fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle (46.53) and third fastest in the 100-yard backstroke (51.30). Beres recorded the top score in the one-meter diving competition (360.37) and third best in the three-meter (297.95).
