OXFORD, Ohio - The men's and women's swim teams showcased their new classes and early-season training in the annual Red and White Intrasquad meet Saturday morning at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
On the women's side, the Red Team defeated the White Team 125-118, while the men's Red Team took down the White Team 128-113.
Multiple event winners for head coach Dave Jennings's defending MAC Champion women were Megan Brunn in the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM and Claire Dickmann in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly. Freshmen event winners were Leah Thornton in the 100-yard breaststroke, Bekka Westrick in the 50-yard freestyle, Maegan O'Connor in the 200-yard backstroke and Taylor Garber 100-yard butterfly.
"Overall, we performed pretty well," Jennings said. "You never know what to expect in this intrasquad and I think they got up, raced and had some fun.'
"We've been training hard and this was an opportunity to see them in action," he added. "Taylor Garber looked very strong. Kelsey Vehr and Megan Brunn swam very well. Overall it was a good meet. We still have a lot of work to do and some things to get ready for our first meet against Purdue."
Head coach
Pete Lindsay's men had a number of multiple event winners.
Darin Smith won the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes,
Michael Carroll won the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes and
Jason Hass won the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard IM. Freshman
Alex Reinhardt took first in the 500-yard freestyle.
"The rookies performed really well," Lindsay said. "They got out there and had a chance to strut their stuff.'
"We've got some work to do on the technical things: the starts and turns," he continued. "We held very strong through the middle of the races. It was tough on them swimming four events with not a whole lot of rest in between, but I was pleased with how they performed. I think we showed some good depth in the 500 free and the IM and we are a little ahead of where I expected them to be in their training. Now we need to get ready for the double header next weekend."
The men's team opens its season Friday, October 9 at Evansville followed by a meet at Southern Illinois the following day.
The women's team has its first meet October 23 at home against Purdue. The next day half of the team will stay at home to compete against Xavier, while the rest of the team will travel to Louisville.
