OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami men's swimming and diving program has announced the signing of nine student-athletes to its Class of 2006. The newcomers will bolster the RedHawks' freestyle, butterfly and diving corps.
Heading up the sprint freestylers is Brian O'Rourke (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves), who finished runner-up in the 200 at the state class "A" championships and came in 12th at the YMCA National Swimming and Diving Championships while competing for Birmingham. He also will provide depth in the butterfly.
Matt Weber (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) and Evan Witte (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) will lend their services in this area as well. Weber took fourth in the 100 and ninth in the 50 at the state meet, while Witte placed eighth and seventh in those events, respectively.
Making the longest trek to Oxford is Aaron Wuensch (Plano, Texas/Plano East), a fifth-place finisher in the 200 free at the Texas state meet. Like O'Rourke, Wuensch also is a proficient flyer.
The younger brother of two-time Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Year John Carroll, who graduated earlier this month, Pat Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) hopes to carry on the family tradition at Miami. He captured sixth place in the 200 free and anchored the sixth-place 200 free relay at the Ohio state meet. Carroll can also swim backstroke.
Scott Robson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) fills the need at distance free. He was ninth in the state in the 500 free and, swimming for B.R. Ryall, improved on that finish at YMCA nationals, where he placed seventh.
Rounding out the swimmers is Andrew O'Neill (Rockaway, N.J./Oratory Prep). Representing Lakeland Hills, O'Neill came in 12th in the 100 back and 16th in the 200 back and 100 breast at YMCA nationals.
The departure of two-time MAC Diver of the Year Dylan Nichols to graduation opens the door for a couple of incoming freshmen, Zach Niehaus (Covington, Ky./Scott) and Eric Teske (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville). Niehaus finished second in the state on the one-meter board, while Teske placed fifth.
"This is a strong group of freshmen that complements our existing strengths in the middle distance freestyles and diving," head coach Pete Lindsay said. "I look for them to contribute significantly in the sprint freestyles and butterfly as well as distance events."
