March 14, 2002

Oxford, Ohio -- On the strength of his winning 200 butterfly time at this year's Mid-American Conference Championships, senior John Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) has qualified for the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., March 28-30. He is the first RedHawk swimmer to do so since 1999.

His clocking of 1:46.03 is the 23rd fastest in the 200 fly this season. The top 26 swimmers made nationals, which will be held at Gabrielson Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.

Because he also made the NCAA "B" cut in the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley, Carroll also has the opportunity to take part in those races at the national championships. However, he will not swim the 500 free as it is his weakest event of the three. The 400 IM will be held on the second day of competition and the 200 fly on the third.

Carroll is trying to become the 10th all-America swimmer in Miami history. The top eight in each event qualify as All-Americas while those finishing ninth through 12th receive honorable mention all-America status.

At the 2002 conference meet, Carroll won three individual events and was named MAC Swimmer of the Year for the second time in his career.
