Miami Men's Swimmers Hit the Road

OXFORD, Ohio -- Coach Pete Lindsay's Miami men's swimming and diving team will be tested on the road this weekend, competing against Cleveland State at the Robert F. Busbey Natatoriumon Friday (Jan. 20, 4 p.m.) and at Buffalo's Alumni Arena Natatorium on Saturday (Jan. 21, 2 p.m.).
Last Friday, the RedHawks evened their dual-meet record at 4-4 by defeating arch-rival Cincinnati at the Nixon Aquatic Center, 181-118. Miami got a double win by senior diver JIM BERES (Columbus), single victories by Alex Reinhardt (1000 freestyle, Littleton, CO), Brendan Melling (200 freestyle, Solon), Mike Cavanaugh (200 butterfly, Bowling Green), Joe Baumgartner (50 freestyle, St. Louis, MO), Dan Nemeth (100 freestyle, Highland Heights), Chris Gunnels (200 backstroke, Chapel Hill, NC) and Logan Emery (500 freestyle, Chesterfield, MO), plus a 200 freestyle triumph by the foursome of Baumgarter, Sam Childs (Palatine, IL), Sam Reeder (Worthington) and Nemeth.
Earlier this week, Beres was named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week for his efforts. The two-time defending Mid-American Conference Diver of the Year will attempt to duplicate that honor for a third time in his home pool on March 1-3 when Miami hosts the 60th Annual MAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Also this week, Cavanaugh was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week. In addition to his first-place finish in the 200 fly, he placed second in the 100 fly with a personal-best time of 51.23. He also helped Miami take second in the 200 medley relay in 1:35.22, as he swam the butterfly leg. Cavanaugh totaled 17 points for Miami, including the relay. He has a cumulative GPA of 3.73 while majoring in philosophy.
Miami's travel team for the CSU and Buffalo trip includes: Joe Baumgartner, Chris Breger, Jim Beres, Maxwell Cain, Mike Cavanaugh, Sam Childs, Sam Crockett, Logan Emery, Sam Flessner, Michael Grainger, Chris Gunnels, Michael Heavilon, Chris Hoppler, Ian Joyce, Andrew Kilkenny, Mike Kline, Brendan Melling, Ryan Neff, Dan Nemeth, Will Olson, Jonathan Profitt, Sam Reeder, Alex Reinhardt and Kegan Rogers.
Coach Wally Morton's CSU Vikings (8-4) feature junior swimmer Berry Thompson, named the Horizon League Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season after his performance at the Oakland University Tri-Meet last Saturday (Jan. 14). Thompson, a CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-American honorable mention selection last season, won the 50 (20.95) and 100 free (45.55) at the Oakland Tri-Meet to help CSU defeat Xavier.
The Buffalo men (4-0) will make their final home appearances of the 2012 season on Saturday. In conjunction with the Senior Day activities, the team will sponsor a "Hope Floats" fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society. Last week the UB men (4-0) scored a 124-100 win over Niagara, then defeated Binghamton, 130-110.
