Miami's men's and women's swimming and diving team closed the Miami Invitational by retaining fifth and fourth place after the finals on the third evening at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
Diving was the highlight on both the men's and women's side with freshmen Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Zach Niehaus (Taylor Mill, Kentucky/Scott) both placing first in their respective diving events. Eberst scored 264.30 points to top Marci Kascir from Western Kentucky University in one-meter diving and Niehaus scored 468.60 points to top Billy Harrison from the University of Toledo in three-meter diving.
The men's swimming team was led by a lifetime best time of 4:30.51 from senior Kelly Ball (Granger, Ind./Penn) in the 500-yard freestyle when he placed sixth in the championship final. Ball also placed eighth in the championship final for the 100-yard freestyle.
The 500-yard freestyle was the strongest event from the men's team with Jason Krasula (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) setting a lifetime best time of 4:39.71 for fifth in the consolation final and 14th overall and freshman Scott Robson (Glen Ellyne, Illinois/Glenbard South) took third in the bonus consolation for 21st overall in 4:42.47.
Both teams gained experience, as the RedHawks were able to give younger swimmers great opportunity.
The women's team received a strong performance from freshman Katie Unger (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) who took sixth in the championship final in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:08.77 and seventh in the championship final in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.77. Unger also placed fourth in the consolation final in the 100-yard freestyle and 13th overall.
