OXFORD, Ohio - Despite not having an individual winner, Miami's women's swimming and diving team leads the pack after one day at the Miami Invitational, while the men occupy fourth place at a meet that includes 19 schools and more than 600 competitors.
The RedHawk women set the pace with 520 points, followed by Kenyon (494), Michigan State (481) and Western Kentucky (397). On the men's side, Kenyon leads with 479 points, while Michigan State (405) and Western Kentucky (329) round out the top three.
No Miami swimmer came away victorious in any race, but several were near the top. Sophomore Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.07, and freshman diver Sara Gonso (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) placed runner-up in the three-meter board with a score of 445.00. The 200 free relay team of Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington), Colleen Rambasek (Kettering, Ohio/Alter), Jackie Hiltman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and Kristen Sivard (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) touched the wall second as well, in a time of 1:35.05. Janura also took fourth in the 50 free.
Freshman Cara Magee (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) and senior Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) finished third in the 500 free (4:57.03) and 200 individual medley (2:05.71), respectively.
The best showing by a men's swimmer came from senior Eric DiSalle (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis), who got touched out in the 200 IM by Michigan State's Joseph Baicy. DiSalle's time of 1:53.24 was just 0.23 seconds off Baicy's pace.
Senior diver Dylan Nichols (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) also lost a close one to a Spartan, as Nick Visscher edged him 294.93-289.35 in the one-meter board.
The only other male finalist for Miami was junior Kelly Ball (Granger, Ind./Penn), who placed eighth in the 500 free (4:32.48).
Five meet records and two pool records were set on the day. Cincinnati's Maria Oberg stole the show, breaking the 500 free meet and pool mark by .25 seconds in the preliminary heat, then smashing her new standard by nearly five seconds in the finals.
