OXFORD, Ohio - The team effort theme of the Miami men's swimming and diving squad remained Miami's game plan on Friday evening against Wright State at the Nixon Aquatic Center, but unlike at Ball State last weekend, the Red and White couldn't pull out another close victory, falling 128-109.
Wright State won nine of 11 swimming events, with junior Scott Robson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) and Andrew O'Neill (Rockaway, N.J./Oratory Prep) the only Miamians atop the podium. Even so, Miami was alive until the last event, the 400 Free Relay, in which a top-three sweep would have given Miami a win. Miami did get two of the three scoring slots available, but the six points earned in the event were not enough.
Boosted by diving uncontested on both boards, Miami used the three-meter sweep and the wins by Robson (200 Fly, 1:53.60) and O'Neill (200 Back, 1:54.84)to pull to within 94-72 with four events still on the table. After the one-meter points were in, Miami trailed 107-94.
A sweep of the second through fifth spots in the 200 Breast got Miami to within 117-103 and within striking distance of taking the meet from a Wright State team that led by as much as 41 points. Miami needed a sweep to win the meet, 119-117, but Wright State's top squad won the event.
The RedHawks swim again Saturday in a tri-meet against Xavier and IUPUI at 1 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
