CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Miami University men's swimming and diving team swam to six season-best times, but fell to Notre Dame, 143-100, and host Cleveland State, 135-102, on Saturday.
Senior Chris Heaton (Centerville) won the only events for the RedHawks, sweeping the one- and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 341.7 and 385.35, respectively. Freshman JIM BERES (Columbus) picked up one of Miami's three second-place finishes with a score of 358.6 in the three-meter event.
The other runner-up finishes came from freshman Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC), who posted a season-best time of 1:43.13 in the 200-yard freestyle, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Gunnels, sophomore Mark Healey (Jenison, MI), senior ANDY NEFF (Chesterland, OH), and junior DAVE BROWN (Lake Orion, MI) with another season-best of 3:08.77.
Brown, in the 50-yard freestyle, was touched-out by only two-tenths of a second by the first-place finisher from Notre Dame. His time of :21.03 was his best and the second-best by any Mid-American Conference swimmer this season.
The RedHawks started the meet by posting season-best times in the first two events. The 400-yard medley relay team of senior Nick DuPuis (Atlanta, GA), junior MIKE CARROLL (Toledo, OH), sophomore Jason Hass (Jackson, MI), and Neff came in third with a time of 3:30.71 followed by another third-place finish by sophomore Darin Smith (Bossier City, LA) in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:38.06).
Carroll also had an individual season-best swim in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:11.07, placing fourth.
Coach Pete Lindsay's RedHawks (2-5) have three weeks to prepare for the Miami Invitational, which runs from Thursday, Dec. 4 through Saturday, Dec. 6 in Oxford.
