By Drew Davis
OXFORD, Ohio - Miami men's swimming and diving came from behind to defeat defending Division III National Champion Kenyon College 159-135 Saturday afternoon at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
David Brown, Michael Carroll, James Beres and Chris Gunnels won multiple events for the RedHawks, who set a number of personal, team and Mid-American Conference season-best times.
"They were excited to swim against Kenyon," head coach Pete Lindsay said of his team. "Kenyon beat us last year and we didn't swim very well last night. Our team has more talent than they've shown so far this season and today they started to put it together."
Kenyon took the early lead, winning the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, but Miami quickly answered back in the 1000-yard freestyle. Darin Smith won the 1000 free in a time of 9:41.48, his fastest time in the event of the season, cutting into the Kenyon lead to make the score 20-16.
Gunnels then won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.58, the fastest time by a MAC swimmer this season.
The Lords extended their lead in the 100-yard backstroke, but Carroll answered back, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (58.78) with his fastest swim of the season.
Brown took first the 50-yard freestyle in 21.10, a MAC season-best. He went on to win the 100-yard freestyle with a personal season-best swim (46.48). His win in the 100 free cut the Kenyon lead to 84-82.
Gunnels won the next event, the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.60) with Smith finishing third (1:56.10) to give the RedHawks their first lead of the meet, 95-90.
Carroll helped extend the Miami lead with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.49). In the following event, the 500-yard freestyle, freshman Alex Reinhardt touched first (4:42.34), swimming the team's fastest time of the season.
Jackson set a team-best time (51.41) with a win the 100-yard butterfly, to make the score 135-107 in favor of the RedHawks.
Beres's wins in the one- and three-meter diving competitions secured the win for the RedHawks, making the score 151-107 with just two events remaining.
Junior Jason Hass set a conference-best time in the 400 IM (4:14.22), finishing second in the event.
Women's head coach Dave Jennings took time during one of the meet's breaks to surprise men's head coach Pete Lindsay with a recognition for his 25 years of coaching service at Miami. Many of Lindsay's former swimmers were in attendance and the crowd gave the coach a standing ovation to show appreciation for all of his work throughout the years. The event was organized by 2008-09 men's captain Justin Dankovich.
The RedHawks next competition is Dec. 3-5, as they host the Miami Invitational at the Corwin M. Nixon Center.
