OXFORD, Ohio - Miami's men's swimming team came out firing on all cylinders in its Mid-American Conference opener and first home meet Saturday afternoon at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center, soundly defeating Ball State and Northern Illinois. The RedHawks beat the Cardinals 168-75 and the Huskies 156-87.
The lone multiple winner for Miami was senior diver Dylan Nichols (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), who swept the one- and three-meter boards with scores of 275.00 and 282.05, respectively. Seniors Kevin Mulgrew (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic), John Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) and Eric Disalle (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis) also won individual events. Mulgrew took first in the 1,650-meter freestyle (16:30.90), Carroll the 200 individual medley (1:53.98) and DiSalle the 100 free (46.66).
Other winners include junior Kelly Ball (Granger, Ind./Penn), who finished first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:53.19, and sophomore Brad Bartel (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), who stole the top spot in the 200 breaststroke from Northern Illinois's Martin Lundgren with a furious push down the stretch. Bartel had a 2:12.97 clocking to Lundgren's 2:13.31.
Miami also won the 200 medley relay (1:36.74) and the 400 free relay (3:08.71).
The squad travels to Fairborn, Ohio on Friday, Nov. 9 to take on Wright State.
