Athens, Ohio -- Miami had a strong showing on the first day of the Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, but still has its work cut out for it as the RedHawks trail Eastern Michigan, 247-231. Seniors John Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) and Eric DiSalle (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis) each won an event for the RedHawks.

Toledo is in third with 194 points.

Carroll's victory came in the 500 freestyle, one of three events he won at last year's conference meet. His time of 4:26.81 easily hit the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standard. It is the seventh individual crown of his career, two short of the school record.

In another repeat performance, DiSalle took top honors in the 200 individual medley, this time with a 1:49.04 clocking, which also made the NCAA "B" cut. DiSalle kept himself busy throughout the day, teaming with sophomore Ken Sensenbrenner (Champaign, Ill./Central), junior Dave Bergan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and sophomore David Fraas (Ashland, Ohio/St. Francis) to place third in the 200 free in a time of 1:22.97, then joining Carroll, Fraas and sophomore Brad Bartel (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) on the third-place 400 medley relay, which touched the wall in 3:22.17.

Fraas also swam in three events on Day One. In addition to the relays, he placed fourth in the 50 free in 20.93.

Intrigue abounded in one-meter diving. Senior Dylan Nichols (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), the two-time defending MAC Diver of the Year, broke the MAC and meet record in the preliminary round with a score of 296.40 but wound up placing third, with 297.05 points, behind Ohio's Robert Kirchbaum and freshman teammate Peter Donohue (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), both of whom broke Nichols' mark, with 298.00 and 297.80 points, respectively.

The 200 IM was Miami's best event of the day, as it placed four swimmers in the final heat and five overall in the finals. After DiSalle, Bartel came in third (1:51.64), junior Jeremy Salomon (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Cleveland Orange) fifth (1:52.67), senior Jason Finck (Villa Hills, Ky./Beechwood) seventh (1:53.15) and senior Ryan Gandre (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) 11th (1:54.27).

The RedHawks also put five swimmers in the finals of the 500 free. Following Carroll was junior Kelly Ball (Granger, Ind./Penn) in sixth (4:32.95), senior Mark Piersma (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom) in 10th (4:32.65), junior Andy Norr (Schoolcraft, Mich./Portage Central) in 12th (4:34.42) and senior Kevin Mulgrew (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic) in 14th (4:37.11).

Day Two preliminaries begin 12 p.m., with finals commencing at 7 p.m.
