OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Peter Donohue (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) successfully defended his one-meter diving title as Miami's men's swimming and diving finished the first day of competition in second place at the Mid-American Conference Championships in the RedHawks' home pool at the Nixon Aquatic Center.

Donohue scored 290.92 points to win the one-meter board as Miami placed four of the top seven divers in the event.

The evening started with Miami taking third in the 200 Free Relay. Sophomores Justin Marcy (Daytona Beach, Fla./Fairfield-Ohio) and Andy Amyot (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) teamed with freshmen Theo Kuczek (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) and Ryan McHugh (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) to pick up 32 points in 1:23.03.

Junior Scott Robson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) represented Miami in the "A" final of the 500 Free, finishing third and earning 16 points in 4:33.69 as Miami moved up to second place after its relay third-place finish. Eastern Michigan took the lead of the meet from Ohio at that point, pacing the field with 128 points to Miami's 60 and Ohio's 58.

Miami placed three athletes in the 200 Individual Medley top final, with junior Pat Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) leading the way in fifth and earning 14 points for the RedHawks' tote in 1:54.63. Eastern Michigan led the meet 195-106 at that point, with Ball State moving into third with 65 points.

The sprint corps had its turn with the evening's fourth event, the 50 Free, with Amyot representing Miami in the "A" final. The sophomore finished seventh, earning 12 points in 20.96 seconds. Eastern Michigan led Miami 223-138 after the sprint event.

After diving pulled Miami to within 249-206 of Eastern Michigan, the RedHawks finished second to EMU in the evening's final event, the 400 Medley Relay, in 3:22.21. Marcy, McHugh, sophomore Griffin Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) and senior Jason Krasula (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) contributed to that finish. The 34 points Miami picked up in the event gave the RedHawks 240 on the day. EMU picked up 40 points in the 400 Medley Relay to finish with 289. Ball State ended with 175 points, Ohio with 157 and Buffalo with 45.

The meet continues Friday with preliminary races at noon and finals at 7 p.m.
