OXFORD, Ohio - Miami won four of 13 events against the Cleveland State Vikings on Saturday afternoon at the Nixon Aquatic Center, but fell short on the final relay race as the RedHawks incurred a 126-117 swimming and diving loss. The defeat drops Miami to 6-3 overall before a return to MAC competition next week, where Miami is 2-0.

The RedHawks won the first relay and took 13 of the 17 available points in the event. Senior Jason Krasula (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg), sophomores Griffin Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) and Justin Marcy (Daytona Beach, Fla./Fairfield-Ohio) and freshman Ryan McHugh (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) won the race in 3:28.58, half a second better than CSU's top squad.

But the Vikings went on to win the next six events, keeping Miami at bay despite the RedHawks consistently picking up points in second-through-fifth places. After Marcy broke CSU's string with a win in the 100 Free in 46.72 and junior Andrew O'Neill (Rockaway, N.J./Oratory Prep) won the 200 Back in 1:53.94, Miami regained the lead at 85-84. But Cleveland State won the next two events, the second of which was a pool-record 339.00 points in the three-meter diving competition for senior Viking Thatcher Carr. Carr broke the record of former RedHawk Dylan Nichols, who set the standard with 326.10 points in 2002. After those two events, CSU led 108-99.

Marshall brought Miami to within four at 115-111 with a win in the 200 Breast by three hundredths of a second over Cleveland State's Dave Duecker in 2:08.77, setting Miami up to win the meet if the team could take the 400 Free Relay. But Miami netted only six points in the last event by finishing second and third, coming up just over three seconds short as Cleveland State cemented the 126-117 margin.

Before the meet, CSU head coach Wally Morton announced a $500 donation to Miami's men's swimming scholarship fund. The donation comes from CSU's Robert Busbey scholarship fund, named for the former CSU swimmer and athletic director who was coached by Raymond Ray, who went on to become Miami's head coach from 1952-1974. Ray coached Morton, a 1970 Miami alum.

Miami returns to MAC competition next week on Senior Night in Oxford when Ohio visits for a 5 p.m. dip.
