The Miami men's swimming and diving team gave the crowd at Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio quite a show as they pulled off a dramatic victory on the last event to edge out Wright State by only one point.
A Miami victory looked to be secure with only two events remaining, but Wright State took the top three spots in the 200-yard breaststroke with one event left. The comeback by the Raiders meant that Miami must either place first or both second and third in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Miami's 'A' team placed second behind Wright State in the final race as the focus turned to freshman Pat Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) as he headed toward the final wall neck-and-neck with Wright State's Alex Dolgov. Carroll finished the relay with a time of 3:12.26 as the Miami crowd roared in approval just ahead of the Raider team, which came in fourth in a time of 3:12.34.
To start the night off for Miami, senior Andy Norr (Schoolcraft, Mich./Portage Central) became the first RedHawk winner by swimming the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:45.42, just ahead of teammate Jason Krasula (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) who finished in 9:45.52 for second place.
Junior Andrew Keefe (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) won Miami's next event in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 0:21.97 to give Miami a distance and sprint victory on only the third event of the night.
Senior Kelly Ball (Granger, IN/Penn) did his part in contributing to the team win by coming from behind to win the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.42.
Norr and Ball showed their senior leadership by winning their second races of the evening. Norr took home the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.24 while Ball touched the wall in 1:41.38 for another come from behind victory, this time in the 200-yard freestyle.
