Todd Spohn, the 2004 and 2005 MAC Men's Diving Coach of the Year, begins his 20th season as Miami's diving coach. An 11-time Mid-American Conference Diving Coach of the Year, Spohn also coaches the women's diving team.
Over the past six seasons, Spohn's men and women divers have taken 14 titles in the one- and three-meter diving events at the MAC Swimming and Diving Championships, with Peter Donohue's back-to-back one-meter and 2005 three-meter titles as the most recent. He was named MAC Diver of the Year in 2005, just one of the two divers Spohn guided to MAC awards last season. On the women's side, Christin Eberst was the one-meter conference winner and was named MAC Co-Diver of the Year.
In 2005, Miami's men's divers brought home four MAC medals, as Zach Niehaus' silver medal on the three-meter board made it a one-two finish for the RedHawks, and Nick Kleinert's bronze on the one-meter board gave Miami two medals in that event as well. Spohn also led two men's divers to NCAA Zone qualification marks, with Donohue and Eric Teske passing the standard. Eberst made it three divers combining Spohn's efforts on the men's and women's sides.
"Todd brings a degree of stability to the program," Lindsay says. "He cares about his kids, and they pick up on that. They don't get the feeling that they're here just to dive."
Spohn earned his bachelor's degree from Miami in 1986 and his master's degree in sport studies, also from Miami, in 1993.
During his diving career, Spohn was a six-time MAC Championship finalist and three-time NCAA Zone Championship qualifier. Since graduation, Spohn has competed and medaled internationally at the Pan Pacific Masters Diving Championship as well as performed professional high diving.
Spohn and his wife, Monica, live in Oxford. They have three children: Hannah (16), Andy (15) and Molly (12).
