Lefty McFadden Invitational
For the first time in its history, a college hockey tournament will be played in Dayton, Ohio when the Dayton Hockey Foundation and the Miami University RedHawk hockey team co-sponsor the Lefty McFadden Invitational on October 4 and 5, 2002 at Wright State University's Ervin J. Nutter Center. The RedHawks and the Dayton Hockey Foundation have a three-year working agreement that will bring the tournament back to Dayton in 2003 and 2004.
In addition to co-sponsoring the event, the RedHawks also serve as the host team. Joining the Red and White on the Nutter Center ice are the Bowling Green Falcons, the Niagara Purple Eagles, and the Air Force Falcons.
The tournament is named for Ed 'Lefty' McFadden, a well-respected Dayton-area sports figure. McFadden-who never played the game of hockey in his life-served as General Manager of the International Hockey League Dayton Gems from their inception in 1964 until 1973. Under McFadden, the Gems became one of the most successful franchises in all of minor league hockey. He was named 'Minor League Hockey Executive of the Year' by The Hockey News in 1970.
