OXFORD, Ohio - Carter Camper (Rocky River, Ohio) picked up Miami’s fifth Central Collegiate Hockey Association weekly award on Monday as he was named Offensive Player of the Week.

Carter Camper

Camper recorded six points on the weekend as he scored one goal and passed out five assists against RPI. The sophomore is the second RedHawk to pick up CCHA Offensive Player of the Week honors as Andy Miele (Grosse Point Woods, Mich.) was honored for his three-assist performance against Notre Dame. The weekly accolade is the fifth of Camper’s career but the first Offensive Player of the Week honor for the Rocky River, Ohio native.

Saturday night, the RedHawks used the nation’s number-one special teams unit to gain an early advantage as Justin Mercier (Erie, Pa.) netted his sixth goal of the season. The goal came after Erik Burgdoerfer of RPI picked up an obstruction-hooking call at 4:40 of the first. Jarod Palmer (Fridley, Minn.) stole the puck in neutral ice and passed it cross ice to Camper, who dished it to Mercier.

After a RPI power-play goal evened the score Miami would regain the lead when Palmer and the RedHawk power play struck again at 12:56 of the second period. Camper worked the puck to Chris Wideman (St. Louis, Mo.) who found Palmer in the slot.

Miami extended its lead in the first period to two on Sunday when Tommy Wingels (Wilmette, Ill.) fired a cross-ice pass to Camper. Camper tipped the puck ahead to Mercier who used his speed and some solid stick work to beat Allen York glove side.

Wingels netted his second goal of the game on a second-period breakaway. Raymond Eichenlaub (Wilmette, Ill.) picked up the puck in neutral ice and then passed it up to Camper, who knocked it on to Wingels.

Camper scored the final goal of the game on a delayed penalty call against RPI. Miami pulled Connor Knapp (York, N.Y.) in favor of an extra attacker on the delayed call. Matt Tomassoni (Carol Stream, Ill.) fired a shot that was saved by York but picked up by Vincent LoVerde (Chicago, Ill.). LoVerde passed it back out to Camper who fired a shot into the back of the net.

Camper will be on the CCHA’s weekly radio show tonight to talk about the award and the RedHawks eight-game winning streak, which is the longest in the nation.

No. 2 Miami (12-3-3, 10-2-2-1) now has two weeks off for holiday break before returning to the ice Jan. 2 at the Ohio Hockey Classic. The RedHawks take on Clarkson at 5:05 p.m. at Value City Arena on the Ohio State campus.
