OXFORD - Head coach Enrico Blasi was pleased to announce the signing of six players on National Signing Day to letters of intent to play collegiate hockey for Miami University.
The group includes three forwards -- Alden Hirschfeld, Andy Miele and Trent Vogelhuber -- two defensemen -- Matt Tomassoni and Will Weber -- and a goaltender -- Connor Knapp.
The RedHawks recruiting class consists of student-athletes from four different states, including two from Michigan and Ohio, and one each from Illinois and New York.
2007 Miami University Ice Hockey Signees
Miele, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound native of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. is in his second season with the Chicago Steel of the Unites States Hockey League. Miele split the 2006-07 season between Cedar Rapids and Chicago, after he was dealt from Cedar Rapids in November, 2006. Through 124 career games, Miele has tallied 103 points on 43 goals and 60 assists. He was named to the USHL East Division All-Star Team in 2007.
"Andy is a very skilled forward who plays hard. Andy can score goals and make plays. With Andy's skills and three years of junior experience, he should step in and be an impact player right away."
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound forward from Dublin, Ohio, Vogelhuber is currently in his first season with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League. In two career games, he has one assist to his credit. Vogelhuber was a 2007 draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets and was also drafted fifth overall in the 2007 USHL draft.
"Trent is a very good player who has suffered some tough injuries, including this season. He is a total package as a player. Trent can create offense while being accountable defensively. Trent also has a great shot.
Rounding out the group of incoming forwards is Hirschfeld, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Sylvania, Ohio. He is in his second season with the Mahoning Valley Phantoms of the North American Hockey League. Through 77 games, Hirschfeld has accumulated 62 points, scoring 21 goals and assisting on 27 more. He has 14 points (4 goals, 10 assists) through 16 games in the 2007-08 season. Hirschfeld was taken second overall by the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets in the 2007 USHL draft.

Weber, one of two defensemen in the recruiting class, is a 6-foot-4, 205-pound native of Gaylord, Mich. He was taken in the second round of the 2007 NHL entry draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets and was the first overall pick of the Chicago Steel in the 2007 USHL draft. Through fourteen games, Weber has two goals, four assists and 47 penalty minutes.
"Will is a very big defenseman who can really skate and create offense. Will also plays very physical and defends well. He has all the tools to be great at our level and beyond."
The other incoming defenseman is Matt Tomassoni of Carol Streak, Ill. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Tomassoni is in his second season with the Cedar Rapids Roughriders, tallying fourteen points (4 goals, 10 assists) and 54 penalty minutes in 59 career games. Tomassoni was a member of the 2006 USA Under 18 Team that won a silver medal in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial World Tournament.
"Matt can skate, has a great shot and really battles hard. Matt is warrior who can hit, defend well, and create offense five on five or on the power play"
Closing out the group of recruits is Connor Knapp, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound goaltender from York, New York. Knapp is currently with the Boston Junior Bruins, members of the Empire Junior Hockey League. Seeing action in eight games this season, Knapp has a goals against average of 1.73, a .933 save percentage and a 4-3-1 record.
"Connor has the skill set and work ethic to be a great goalie at our level. He is very big, tracks the puck very well and is athletic for his size."
Miami is ranked No. 1 in the nation and carries an 11-1-0 record into this weekend's match up with the Golden Griffins of Canisius College.
